About us

Photonics and Bionanotechnology Association “PhoBiA” is an interfaculty scientific student association integrating students from the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology. The association was founded in 2008 on the initiative of Dr. Katarzyna Matczyszyn by the participants of the international, interdisciplinary Master degree programme — Molecular nano- and biophotonics for telecommunications and biotechnologies (Monabiphot).

Currently, our association has more than 20 members, among them there are the students of both Engineer and Master degree, as well as the PhD students.

The activity of our association is  based on the meetings of the members, where the students working on nanomaterials and nanostructures have a great opportunity to discuss and share information and doubts with colleagues. Because of the similar topic of interests, but different background and experiences,  we can verify the results of our research and see the aspects that previously seemed to be meaningless. The early years students are introduced to the scientific research, so they can not only learn to work in the lab, but also discuss their results and the methods of obtaining the knowledge.

The organization of the periodic international scientific conference PANIC (PhoBiA Annual Nanophotonics International Conference) is considered to be the main point of PhoBiA activity. Till now, we succeeded in the organization of several fully English-language editions of this event, aimed at research concerning nanotechnology, photonics, biophotonics and related branches of the modern science. The main speakers of the conference are students and PhD students from Poland and from abroad. Each time, the numerous plenary lectures are given by the leading international specialists in the fields covered by the conference. What is more, the conference edition in 2014 was joined with the Polish-Australian scientific symposium — Symposium on Photoactive Synthetic Materials supported by the Foundation for Polish Science.

In 2015 we established the collaboration with the student scientific association operating in the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
