This year, the rivarly at the MANIAC competition was very fierce. The participants sent us about 100 beautiful photos taken with various microscopic techniques. Choosing the best works was a very hard task, because every piece of work was of a very high standard.
However, the most important thing is that all of them were made in accordance with the philosophy accompanying the MANIAC competition – science and art are sometimes two sides of the same coin.
To show the beauty of science through art.
To show the application of art through science
Therefore, we invite you to look through the amazing works sent to us this year.
Let yourself be amazed by the beauty of science 🙂

MANIAC 2021 RESULTS
During 2021, we have organised two exhibitions with beautiful MANIAC 2021 photos: spring edition in May with photos from winners of the contest and autumn edition, with beautiful photos from the rest of participants. Here are some statistical facts concerning your feelings and thoughts about both exhibitions 🙂
Spring edition
1. ATTENDANCE
38 people took part in the survey, the vast majority of whom responded very positively, it was as much as 87% of who were voting 5 or 6 (in 6 grades scale) that MANIAC 2021 was an interesting event.
2. RESULTS OF THE COMPETITION
By the decision of the judges, the competition was won by Ms Nina Taranowicz-Staniak, representing the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. She presented the work entitled “Sunset on the tip of the iceberg” (WORK NUMBER 27). On the podium there was also Ms Dominika Benkowska-Biernacka with a work entitled “Eruption of Vesuvius” (WORK NUMBER 19) and Ms. Joanna Posłowska, whose work was entitled “Don’t mess with the spider” (WORK NUMBER 9). The Audience Award is given ex-aequo to our Winner Ms Nina Taranowicz-Staniak and Ms Ming Ying Tsang. It is worth to say, that Ms Ming also get the Honorary Award from our judges! Congrats!
3. FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS
The participants received the event very positively, as evidenced by their responses, namely over 87% of participants would like to take part in similar events, it was difficult for five respondents to say. However, what motivates is 100% of people liked the idea of combining education with art.
4. INFORMATION ON PARTICIPANTS
Most respondents currently live in the city of Wrocław and its surroundings, but we’ve got some participants from other areas in Poland, they are mostly university students 50% and working persons 39%. We can also highlight school students 2% and people who don’t work 8%. Survey respondents: 53% women, 45% men and 2% other gender.
5. Future Maniac exhibition
Several of the spectators wrote their expectations connected with next MANIAC exhibition. It is e.g., “something connected with computers” or things linked to light and/or colors. We are so happy because some wrote that want to see our faces too. A few of watchers want to know more about works (maybe QR code on the bottom with more information about substances, tools, movies how people work in lab and so on). Onlookers also want to see more photos from SEM and confocal microscope, biological things like microorganisms, viruses, and everyday objects.
Autumn edition
1. ATTENDANCE
21 people took part in the survey, the vast majority of whom responded very positively, it was as much as 95% of who were voting 5 or 6 (in 6 grades scale) that MANIAC 2021 was an interesting event.
2. The audience award
The Audience Award is given to Dominika Benkowska-Biernacka for her work ‘Straight way to heaven’, which was made using the polarized light microscope. Congratulations!
3. FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS
The participants received the event very positively, as evidenced by their responses, namely, over 80% of participants would like to take part in similar events; it was difficult for four respondents to say, but hopefully next year’s exhibition will dispel all doubts. However, motivating is that almost 100% of the people enjoyed the idea of combining education through art, which makes us very happy!
4. INFORMATION ON PARTICIPANTS
More than half of the respondents currently live in Wroclaw and surrounding areas (66%), but there were some participants from other areas in Poland and from abroad, moreover almost one in three respondents is still studying (29%), and, on the other hand, working people were 62%. We can also highlight people who marked ‘None of mentioned’: 9%. Gender of respondents: 48% women, 39% men and 13% other.
5. Future Maniac exhibition
Several of the spectators wrote their expectations related to the next MANIAC exhibition. They want to see, for example, something connected with everyday machines (structural elements). Some of the watchers want to see more TEM pictures. Onlookers also want to see human organs in art, so it may be a challenge for the next year for the MANIAC contestants.
Thank you!
WE WANT TO TELL THANK YOU! FOR EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WANT TO PARTICIPATED IN THIS EVENT. WE HOPE WE’LL SEE EACH OTHER NEXT YEAR. ONE MORE TIME, CONGRATS TO WINNERS AND GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE.
We are sincerely thankfull to all organizers and media:
